The forward roll was one of the first rolls used in the three finger style. When Earl came along, it was almost used exclusively. He changed all that. It's still an important roll to master. Here's some samples of what it looks like and how it's used. When you practice, remember to lead off with your thumb and keep note spaces even. Practice slowly and build up. Speed will come eventually.
Now try the same roll using the 3rd string instead of the 2nd string...

... and another increase in tempo...

The Foggy Mountain Roll was made famous by Earl in Foggy Mountain Breakdown. It's used in a variety of ways. Be sure to alternate the index and thumb on the right hand. A strong attack to this roll is the key to making it stand out! Here's a few examples.

String a couple of these together with a hammer-on on the second string and you have a genuine Foggy Mountain roll!
